Mary Matthews

Third Year Instructor

Hi! I'm Mary Matthews, 'Miss Mary' to my students.

This will be my third season with Swim Warriors. I have been a competitive swimmer for ten years. I first met Brooke six years ago as she coached Otwell Middle School's swim team for four seasons. It is such a blessing to now continue my friendship with her through Swim Warriors. I am currently attending Georgia Southern University and will be a sophomore in the fall of this year. I am pursuing a degree in psychology with the intention to become a therapist.

For three years now, I've nannied and babysat for children between the ages of 2 and 11 and I truly love working with kids. I also was a lifeguard at the Cumming Aquatic Center for three summers. In addition, I am certified in CPR/AED/First Aid in adult and pediatrics through the Red Cross.

Swimming has opened many opportunities up for me such as being on my high school's state team, competing at state five times, and meeting some of my best friends. I swam for the Forsyth Central High School swim team for four years and it was my favorite part of the school year.  My best strokes are freestyle and backstroke, but I’m an expert on all technical strokes. I have a plethora of knowledge on swim team regulations, how to improve endurance, and stroke techniques.

I taught over 120 students throughout the last two summers, working with ages as young as 7 months old and many competitive swimmers. My experience teaching also includes students with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder. I look forward to taking on double the amount of swimmers this summer to save for college! In addition, I will be using the month of April to complete in-depth training with swimmers as young as six months. It is important to me as a Swim Warrior instructor to continuously better my skills in order to feel confident in teaching all ages, and abilities.

I am so excited for this summer season so I can continue to work with kids and share my passion for swimming with them! I can't wait to meet you all!

"If I could give any advice to swim parents it would be to push your kids even when they aren’t at their lessons, keep practicing their techniques so they can reach their full potential at a faster rate."

MY FAVORITE SWIM MEMORY

My favorite memory with Swim Warriors is watching all my younger students get so overjoyed once they can swim by themselves. It makes me so happy seeing them believe in themselves and in some cases getting over their fear of the water.
